Long before New Zealand Fashion Week, New Zealanders ought out ways to express themselves through clothing. Hats feature prominently amongst the items they have used to show their fashionable side. During the late nineteenth century, Sarah Cryer donned a riding hat to pose on her mount Starlight. John Vigor Brown and Herman van Staveren both struck elegant poses in top hats. Rachel Reynolds took millinery fashion to new heights with an ornate headdress. Well-known Taupo guide Edward Lofley in the 1870s wore the eccentric 'informal' costume of the Armed Constabulary topped off with a broad-brimmed hat with pheasant's feather. (June 2007)
